1978년 캐나다 밴쿠버에서 의학학술지 편집인들이 비공식 모임을 갖고 학술지 투고 형식과 지침을 만든 것에서 기원한다. 이들 밴쿠버 그룹은 국제의학학술지편집인위원회(ICMJE: International Committee of Medical Journal Editors)로 발전하여 원고 투고 양식을 계속적으로 개정하고 있다.
